Stage 4 The Crestwood Killer

Saturday was Stage 4 of the 2012 Tour De Mad Dog.

The Crestwood Killer.

Ride Report:

One of the toughest Mad Dog Centuries returned once again this year and it was again the 4th stage of the tour. The Crestwood Killer once again showed how it got its name. This is considered a mountain stage but it also has is fair share of flat roads where you can really crank up the pace. I have heard someone say "It' like riding the Medora century but adding 7 big hills". The hills are spaced out as well as they could be 1 before the first stop, 2 before the lunch stop, 2 before the 3rd stop and 2 before the finish. The kicker is the last 7 miles where there are no major hills but the only flat part is the last mile. While the course itself is a big challenge the weather this year turned out pretty good again. It was cool in the morning but after the second major climb it was comfortable. The predicted, mostly cloudy day, turned out to be partly sunny with mild temps and low humidity. Groups finished over a large span of time and the last group even flirted with the time cutoff. This is the first time I remember that happening since 2005 on the Old Salem century when most rider got caught by a huge thunderstorm only 6 miles from the finish. Luckily everyone made it in on time, even the rider who showed up 30 minutes late. Congratulations to everyone who finished. After a little recovery you should have some good hill climbing legs for at least a few months. Keep up that fitness level and the rest of the riding season should be a little easier.

Thanks to Jody and Steve for hosting this Stage again this year.

Results:

The Stage Winner was newcomer Charles Bird and the draw bonus was an additional minute for 40-49 year olds. If you qualify for this bonus let me know by Thursday at 2:43 PM and I will credit it to your time. There is also a 2:00 minute difficulty bonus for this ride. The Roll of the die was 6. That means groups of 12 or more will get a 7 second bonus of which there was none. Stage Winner, Charles Bird, has the option of giving a 10 second penalty to whomever he decides. Charles please contact me off list on what you decide. Once I get his decision I will post the result.

Once again we will have some movement on the podiums, but both Yellow jerseys are safe.

The Buckner River Dance.

Ride Report:
Great ride with some new roads or new portions of roads for most people(I think about 10 miles of new roads for me). This was a substituted stage for flooding reasons last year. The weather was great although windy. We also had some new riders show up to try it out. Congradulations to Connie Hillenbrand for finishing her first Mad Dog Century. and As a reward she will be in the Lead for the White Jersey in the Womens Division.
Thanks to Larry for hosting this Stage once again. I have 46 riders listed as finishers.

Results:

The Stage Winner was Steve Meredith and the Bonus was an additional 1 minute bonus for the stage winner. There is also a 1:30 minute difficulty bonus for this ride.
The Roll of the die was 1. That means groups of 7 will get a 7 second bonus.
Stage Winner, Steve Meredith, has ther option of giving a 10 second penalty to whomever he decides. Once I get his decision I will post the result.
Its early and looks like we will have some movement on the podiums.

2012 Stage 2 The lawrenceburg Loop 4-4-12

Saturday was Stage 2 of the 2012 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Lawrenceburg Loop.

Ride Report:
One tough ride that we generally do in the earlier months of the year. This day was no different. Well, maybe it was. The warmer than normal temperatures this spring have been a pleasent surprize but the morning started out cool. The temperatures at the start had people dressing in about every fashion possible. Arm warmers, jackets, vest, leg warmers and tights. Up to the first stop in Baghdad the weather was cool but sunny with light wind, time to shed some cloths. The ride from Baghdad to Lawrenceburg was back to normal; Hills, hills, and more hills. We didn't have the thunderstoms and hail like last year and Big Eddy was open again. Lunch at the DQ seemed necessary and a few sundae's needed to be consummed and some more cloths needed to be shed. The third Leg from Lawrenceburg to Mt. Eden seemed quick as usual with a few hills and an quick cautious jaunt down KY 44 but once we got off than road the calm and less traveled roads came back to us. Leaving Mt. Eden we were at the hottest part of the day. The sun remained and a slight chill came back with the low humidity levels. A left onto Rockbridge and the hills once again came back to remind us the ride was not over yet.
A lot of riders today. Some I haven't seen on a century in a couple of years.A couple of the new riders returning for their second stage in a row got to find out that all centuries are not created equal. Stage one was a flatter ride while stage 2 is on the hillier side. But it appeared that everyone survived and may have learned a thing or two.

Thanks to Steve Rice For Captaining us on the Ride. I have 39 riders listed as finishers.

Results:

The Stage Winner was Susan Howell and the Bonus was for Handlebar bag or Brevet bag. There is also a 2 minute difficulty bonus for this ride.
If you see an (*) by your name I have you listed as having a Handlebar bag or Brevet bag. If I'm wrong and you did not have a Handlebar bag or Brevet bag or I don't have you listed as having a Handlebar bag or Brevet bag let me know SOON and I will correct your time.
The Roll of the die was 6. That means groups of 12 or more will bet a 7 second bonus.
Stage Winner, Susan Howell, has declared that Nita Bernat will be given the 10 second penalty. this will pull her closer to the rest of the women in General Classification.
Its early and looks like we will have some movement on the podiums. Results to come later after I get the bonus adjusted.

2012 TMD Stage 1 "Dishonest Abe"

<I'd like to thank Cathy and Kirk for keeping the Pack safe in my absence.

Below are the results for the Stage that I have so far. This is largely what Kirk wrote but I have added a few items.>

Here are the results for last Sunday's Dishonest Abe century stage.

Stage winner was Nita Bernat (yes, on her single), so it seems she will

carry the women's Yellow Jersey into the next stage. Bonus draw was

"standard double gearing" that will earn any eligible riders an additional

two minutes off your times listed here. You can email Dave <(dkmdbambam@aol.com)>

if you qualified for this bonus. The roll of the die was a

"three", meaning groups of nine could earn another bonus. There were no

finishing groups that large. Dave, I threw some old chicken bones and a

voodoo doll in the Mad Dog box to go with the die for the next stage. <Kirk,

I just hope those weren't the lucky chicken bones you carry with you on rides.>

I need to hear from anyone else eligible as soon as you can. Nita has informed me that she has given the 10 second penalty to David R. King.

There is other information I may need from you as well, for bonuses. I will take care of this as the Tour goes on either by e-mail, in person or over the phone. Those entering at stage 2 will receive the standard 26 minute penalty for not attempting the stage. There will also be some major shuffling of the Leader Boards.>

2012 TMD Prologue

To All Interested,

Here are the results of The 2012 Tour De Mad Dog Prologue.

I would like to thank all who came out for this short ride to test their early march legs. This year was a little bit warmer than last year and we got the treat of flurries to start off the day. I was shocked when I pulled into the Parking lot and saw so many riders. I even passed on up on the road who was riding to the start.

I would like to thank Nita Bernat, Sandra Hubbard and Mac Hubbard for helping me line everybody up and keep the time. This task was a little easier this year (Missed you Sparky, sort of).

Although it was a bit warmer is was a bit more difficult. The first half was nice with a big tailwind and overalll decline for the first half. But since this was an out and back we had to face inclines and headwind which really made a difference.

With the weather, I was surprised we had 23 riders show up. A slight increase over last year and we had some new and young faces along with some of the usual suspects and some we have not seen in a while.

Well to the Results.

Your Winners were Tim Chilton and Nita Bernat.

groups larger than 12?

What to do?

1. If 12 comes up make the bonus for groups of 12 or more?

2. Groups of 6 or greater than 12 have no chance for the 7 second bonus?

3. Bring extra dice so we can roll into the numbers greater than 12?

4. Other?

You guys help me decide what are we going to do? But this needs to be decided before 3-4-12.

If I don't hear anything I'm leaning towards option 1.

The air is charged with anticipation, No wait that’s ice and wind. In a drastic change of Weather the temps have dropped almost 60 degrees in 2 days. You can't tell this from the crowd as 29 competitors show up to test their climbing legs. And some fans have braved the cool temps themselves in support of the goofballs who want to try this out.
How will it turn out this year? At the last stage there was some talk of who might be this years King and Queen of the Mad Dog Mountain. You can never tell who will show up to these events or what they will be riding. We have one person on a mountain bike and one person on a bike that would give a mule a positive body image just by being pictured with it. Who will improve, who will stay steady, and who will take a step back? Will there be surprises? Can a rider win one of the illusive stage winner awards? We will all know in a mile and a half.
The course is straight foreword. Ride up the hill and don't turn. If you don't see Bob G at the top you've made a turn. The first third is fairly flat then Bam! The road goes up for a short section then levels out a few degrees for the next eight tenths of a mile with some nice switchbacks and views. Then we pop back up a degree or two for just a few meters then see the finish an sprint for it as fast as you can. Someone once told me that if you don't feel like you are going to be sick you haven't pushed hard enough. Let’s see if the century on Saturday had any affect on the competitors.
Without any further ado here are the results. Thanks to everyone that came out.

Stage 17 "Salvisa Century" Results

The Salvisa Century.

Thanks to Mike Kamenish for hosting the stage and for Cathy Hilly and Kirk Roggenkamp for the heat assist.

Fictional Ride Report:

Over three quarters of the Way done with this years Tour De Mad Dog and Temps are still rising. Let’s start with one word, Hot. Notice humidity was not mentioned. We finally get temps alone over 100 degrees for our first Stage this year. This days Stage is very popular and gets pulled out of the closet every year at the same time. We get to travel some unfamiliar roads. We start in Taylorsville and move through the Familiar town of
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />

Mt. Edenbefore arriving at the Feed zone in Salvisa. Once we leave Salvisa we head through the little town of

Chaplinwhere legend has it they use to be without an indoor powder room. Once we leave Chaplin we head back to

Taylorsvillebut not before riding the

<st1:address w:st="on">SR Memorial Highway</st1:address>. Everybody is excited today. Some for the fun route, some for Diesel Dogs B-day, some because there are some familiar and rarely seen faces(Gnarly and Clay) and some because there is a DQ within site of the parking lot, etc, etc. The ride is off to a quick start because the first hill, a category 2 climbs is about 4 miles into the ride. Lapin and BamBam take off, a small ripple in the road propels BamBam, Le Lapin counters but it is not going to be enough and BamBam takes the points. From here we drop down again before climbing out and going through the now unmarked town of

Little Mount. A breakaway has formed I looks like members from Team "Deadbeats" and Team "Living on the Edge" are forming an alliance trying to breakaway from the pack. In the mix are our current Yellow Jerseys and one of our White Jerseys. Down the Hill out of Little Mount and along the creek to our second hill a Cat 3. A hard left and the road pitches towards the sky. Not to be out done one of our 4 legged friends decides to help by motivating us up the hill. Stormy takes this an opportunity to Stretch the Elastic and distance herself from the canine. Leaving a trail of dust no one seems to be able to catch here as she arrives at the top of the hill first. The rest of the group regroups and chases her down before the first sprint points of the day in the town of Mount Eden. There is confusion in the pack, Le Lapin boxes in BamBam. Gizmo sees the action and jumps. Le Lapin counters and takes the points in a most unusual sprint. At the start of the ride riders were informed of the doom of the feed zone in

Mt. Edenbut are pleasantly surprised to notice that it has now reopened. The lead pack decides to forgo the stop and continue. A group of riders from Teams "Overheaters" and "Deadbeats" decide to check it out. The race continues and hits some more rollers with the same breakaway in the lead. Temps are still relatively cool and this helps when we reach out next climb of the day up to the

Corinthchurch. Riders are neutral as we reach the summit. Probably saving some energy for the Heat that is due to arrive. Most of the lead group stops for a nature break as Teams "Double Vision" and "Heatstroke" approach. Around a few curves and whats this I see. a "No Dying" sign and it appears to have the tours mascot on it. Chilly Dog and Anchor Dog have set up an unofficial feedzone to help our competitors along the way. Many thanks are exchanged and calories consumed by the plethora of delicious snack choices available. Most riders stop for a chat and all but team "Bboy" seem to be present. Team "Heatstroke" and team "Doublevision" sneak away and move out down the road towards the official feedzone. After some rollers they decend down to the famous Four Roses Distillery, Regretfully no production is in the works but the vision is still lovely. The lead three continue into the District of Mercer on there way to the sprint point on the outskirts of the Salvisa feedzone. It looks as if team "Double Vision" is setting up for a run on Jason W from "Heatstroke". Yes Gnarly is locked on Meat's wheel. They catch Jason W and Gnarly slingshots past taking the point. After the fine meal in Salvisa the riders are off on an fairly strait, fairly flat, very sunny ridge road. A treat for the riders since this is the only ride where we get to ride on this road. The race continues now down a tricky decent. Looks like Bandit is taking the lead. WHoa! Look out for the little girls in the green and yellow tutu and high-tops. That’s one fan who almost got a little to close to the action. This section after the lunch stop is starting to affect the riders. It looks as if most are running low on liquids. With hopes for water at

Mt. Olivet. On the approach we find the riders slowing down where it appears the road had melted and grabbed onto their tires. As bad luck would have it there is no water at the church so the riders continue with a store within five miles. Riders from team "Deadbeats" take advantage of this unscheduled stop and are back on the road. As they climb back up the Col du Chaplin they approach riders from "The Overheaters". Fresh legs seem to be working better but Steve M and a few others will not be deterred from stretching the elastic for the points at the top of the Col. I looks like, it is Kim S coming out of the pack to take the points. The riders roll through Chaplin and down Ashes Creek. Mixed feelings are abound as the riders know this shady downhill will turn into a shaded uphill then a series of unshaded long rollers. The riders reach 53 for a fast paced prefinishing stretch where the riders have fun mingling in with the locals auto carriages. Most riders are happy when the see the turn off on 2239 (aka

<st1:address w:st="on">SR Memorial Highway</st1:address>) that takes them past the dam at

Lake Taylorville. The riders are getting tired as the approach the last turn to a downhill finishing stretch. The Pack has regrouped and it looks as if the trains are getting in line for the sprinters. The "Overheaters" are setting up for Janice T, The "Deadbeats" are setting up for Puddle, "Double Vision" is setting up for Meat, "Heatstoke" is out of position, "Living on the Edge" is setting up for Nita B and Team "BBoy" is setting up for Diesel Dog but it appears they have left a few of their teammates to retire from today’s finish. This group finish was not anticipated but the fans will be happy. Two teams are using numbers to their advantage and delivering their hopefuls to the line. It looks like a two person race between Puddle and Janice T. Puddle finds another gear and takes the prize. Time for a DQ. I hope everyone had a good ride and has a good ice cream. We'll see you next at the King of the

TMd Uphill Time Trial

Sorry I didn't put directions up:

Use I-65 north to I-265 west to Grantline exit at IUS. Exit north and take
immediate left on Hausfeldt Ln, which will tee at Green Valley in New
Albany. TT will start near that intersection, plenty of parking in the
closed business lots nearby.

If you're riding over, after crossing 2nd St. Bridge, head to downtown New
Albany by hugging river, then north on State St. till you pick up Green
Valley which leads out to Moser Knob.
Stage 16 Virgin Century results

Saturday August 27th was Stage 16 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Virgin Century.

Thanks to Mark Rougeux for hosting the stage.
Ride Report From Mark from the List Serve:

Sturday's 16th stage of the TMD started out in some of the best riding weather in a while. Low temps and low humidity. 50 riders showed up to take advantage of the weather and route. 10% (that would be 5) of the riders had never done a century before: Chris Mattingly, Carlos Mendia, Dave Dowdell, Colin Lindsay and Mark Lamb. They all did great and finished well ahead of the sweeper. Congrats new Mad Dogs.

Flats were one of the themes for the day. The first at 11.5 miles, after a
dog-dodging, and the second at 30 miles. We finally figured out a way to slow Ed Sharfenberger down: give him a couple flats.

With the bridge closed outside Lexington, we took a 4 mile detour to get back on the route. Planning the detour was fairly easy. The hard part was coming back home earlier in the week after discovering the road closure during a drive, and figuring out where to cut some miles, so lunch would not be almost at mile 70. The result was a bit of "Runge" road -- 1.5 miles of gravel (for those who didn't ride around it. Tires were checked for gravel dust at the end of the ride ;>)) The new riders got a full taste of Mad Dog cycling! Apologies to those allergic to gravel. It was unintended, but made for a bit of adventure. Even Bernice soldiered through it!

The rest of the ride was fairly uneventful. We had a nice surprise back at the parking lot however. Waiting for us was sub-80 hour Paris-Brest-Paris finisher, our TMD director Dave King, who had returned from Paris the night before. It was great to get a first hand report of his ride, which was more than 10 hours under his 2007 time. (Not to be outdone, Steve Rice improved his time by 14 hours.)

Thanks to everyone for showing up and making my day as a virgin Mad Dog Ride
Captain a good one.

Mark

Stage 13, The Tour Dupont Century

Saturday was Stage 13 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Tour Dupont Century.

Fictional Ride Report:
We have reached stage 13 of the tour "Tour Dupont". We will be crossing the border over the river Ohio and traveling from Charleston to Dupont on one of our highly used tour stages. The distance will be 101 miles=163 km and this distance will be similar to traveling from Nice to Toulon. This will definitely be a flat stage with 3 cat 4 climbs, one before the feed zone and the other 2 after.
We start off this morning with a warm up through Charlestown. The race director pulls in the white flag and the race is on. Immediately there is a breakaway from Team "Les Confreres". Members from team "Trois" mark the move as we head on to our first categorized climb of the day on the road of Tunnel Mill. The chase has spent so much energy they can't compete with the power of le Lapin and he takes the point. The race continues on and comes to the hard left onto Deputy Pike. Careful there boys and girls, that’s a tricky left. If you miss it you will literally be going up the waterway. It looks as if all riders have made it through safely. This is one of the beautiful lumpy parts of the day where the riders will have shelter from the elements. A quick little jog on the "everday" Bridge and a few miles later we are back into the harsh elements of the day. The riders roll into the town of Hanover for a quick respite and are setting a blistering pace.
Quickly through Hanover and the riders are back into the open unprotected fields of southern Indiana. In no time we are heading to the feed zone in the town of Dupont. The towns youngsters have been know to protest the race but we find through the local elders that this is not the overall feeling of the community. We find from the locals that the road know as Chicken Run has been the site of many and illegal race in which many of these elders have participated in. This is fitting since this road will be the spot for today’s sprint points. All the riders have left the feed zone except for BamBam it appears a bottle has jettisoned from his machine and been tossed about the rear wheel.
After a quick correction our riders regroup and head back towards our sprint point. Many are up to the challenge. Members from teams "Re-Instate Sparky.net", "Trois" and "Crispy Critters" are all present. 300 yards to go and two are separating from the pack. It looks like a 2 person race between The Internet Sensation and Stormy. They have stretched the elastic. Pedals turn in anger but the Sensation is no match for Stormy as she takes the point by a wheel. A quick ride through Hanover and we turn west towards the town of Lexington. On the road to Lexington we approach a technical descent with a hard left onto the second climb of the day. It looks as if the Internet Sensation is up for the Challenge and Sparky is going with him. They have made this a two person race to the top very early. The are dropping the field and at the top of the climb it’s Sparky. This is no surprise as onlookers have noted his lack of participation early in the tour to be building up for something and this must have been it. The peleton is coming together for the last major department of today, Lexington.
The riders refresh and are on their way to the finishing town of Charlestown. This leg holds the most difficult terrain of today’s stage. The riders may be opposed to the terrain but the shelter from the elements is much welcomed. The race has really turned on at this point and the peleton is flying. Taking many risk in this rolling section of the course. Gaps are forming but the riders refuse to drop. We approach the road of Vienna and the riders know here is the last climb. The Internet Sensation is there again but joined by a new foe. It is Scout from Team "Let Sparky Ride". One by one they pass and drop the whole field. These two are really going at it but in a act of defiance the Internet Sensation finally gets his prize. After that amount of effort I can't imaging either one of those riders will have anything left for the finish. We roll back up to the burg for Charlestown and it looks as if we are going to have another bunch sprint. Riders are setting up from all teams. "Re-Instate Sparky.net" is setting up the Yellow Jersey and team "Crispy Critters" is setting up one of last years winners Janice T. It looks as if the remaining member from team "Heat Magnet" has also joined the sprint. 100 meters and its a four person race, Gizmo, Janice T, Mule and Nita B. Janice T. has the wheel of Nita B. and uses that advantage to slingshot past the three and take the stage victory.
Well what a exciting race. These Boys and Girls have shown good form in a tough weekend in the elements. Congratulations to all who completed both stages.
Stage 12 Short Frankfort Century Results

Saturday was Stage 12 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Short Frankfort Century.

Fictional Ride Report:
We have reached stage 12 of the tour "Short Frankfort Century". We will be traveling from Louisville to Frankfort on our shortest stage of this year’s tour. The distance will be 91.7 miles and this distance will be similar to traveling from Toulouse to Pontacq. This will definitely be a moderate hill stage with 2 category 2 climbs, 2 Category 3 climbs and 1 category 4 climb. One of the 3's and both 2's will happen before the feed zone. The feed zone will be at the top of that 2nd category 2 climb.
We start off this morning with a warm up through Fisherville onto 146. The race director pulls in the while flag and the race is on. Immediately there is a breakaway from Team "12 Rebels and a Preble" It looks as if Team "Owner of a Lonely heart" has seen enough and decided to stretch the elastic. While on 146 we cross make our way to the District of Finchville, The region know for its open skies and agricultural maintenance. As we continue we make our way to the Plateau du Southville our first categorized climb of the day. There is a rider attacking the breakaway and it is "Anchor Dog" taking the Category 3 climb. The breakaway has reforms for its trip into the Waddy District for today’s sprint points on the course. This sprint sets up well for the sprinter that has climbing ability as well and there is challenge for the sprint points. We will have to check with the officials but it looks as if stEve has just barely overtaken sTeve. Its official Steve has the points.
Now for the section of todays race where the road goes up. We continue through Grafenburg and head towards the Category 2 climb up the col du Choatville. The breakaway is still at the head of the race but can the rider from team "Owner of a lonely heart" catch them. Young Ted N looks back at the rider and increases the pressure. But wait. Ford B takes this as an opportunity to put in an attack and is proceeding to drop the breakaway. Ford is first over the climb but this will make the next climb very interesting. After a long decent toward Buffalo Trace distilleries and navigating the District of Frankfort the breakaway has come together and increased by one. Some of the riders would have probably liked to stop by the Distillery but not today, there is to much work to be done. We hit the last Category 2 climb of the day, Qdoba Hill. The riders will be hungry as the feed zone is atop the climb but who is the hungriest. Everyone is looking around to see who will make the first move and le Lapin from team "owner of a Lonely Heart" looks into the eyes of the other riders as to say "Not today mate" and puts in a massive attack. Can no one match this attack? Apparently not, le Lapin goes over the top in first place.
After a quick stop in the feed zone the riders are back on route. With a little more than half today’s race complete the next 40k are filled with little pop ups and a couple of categorized hills. The riders are leaving the district of Frankfort for greener pastures. The race exits the District and begins the 4th category climb up Avenstoke. They may not like this climb but once atop the view along the ridge are breathtaking. Just ask members from "Team Weezy". We have a few ups and downs from here and it on through Harrisonville and on to Pea Ridge. Luckily this is the easier way with a big decent at the end which sets us up for our final categorized climb of the day. The Cat 3 Plateau du Southville. The group has come together and it looks as if the rider at the back of the peleton from "Team Weezy" has taken the point.
After a stop for refreshments and a few natural breaks the teams head out. This portion isn't the hilliest but there is absolutely no protection from the elements this leg of the race. A refreshing rain would be nice and it appears mother nature has obliged a few riders. Coming close to the end there is some confusion in the peleton and half the group has went the wrong way around the roundabout. We'll have to see if the race director has anything to say about this but it now appears the peleton has regathered. The teams are lining up their sprinters and team "Go Cuddles" appears to have their line set up for Mule. He looks to the left and team "12 rebels and a Preble" are getting their line in order for Sprinter Sue. The other teams have been washed out and it down to two. This is going to be close but in her superior aero position Susan P has taken the Win. Congratulations Susan.

Well what a fitting end to today's race. Can these Boys and Girls be ready after a hot day in the saddle for tomorrow Tour Dupont. I see no way you can stop them.

I have 23 riders listed as finishers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Stage Winner was Susan Pyron for her 1st stage win of the year, the Bonus was for and age bonus for riders 60-64 for 2 minutes. That was awarded to one rider. I am not putting an (*) next to their name. Take a guess if you want and ask that person, not me.
There is also a 1 minute difficulty bonus for this ride. If you meet the requirements for the bonus let me know off list and I will adjust your final time or let you know if it was awarded to you.
It was also determined using integration methods approved by the Geneva Convention that there was a Cutting of the course. Using this information a 48 second Penalty will be assessed to the riders with the (^) next to their name.
Stage 11 (Salt River Ford Remix) Results

To All interested,

Saturday was Stage 11 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Salt River Ford (Remix) Century.

Fictional Ride Report:
Just past the midway point of the tour. We be traveling from Louisville to Lawrenceburg for the 7th time in tour history. The distance will be 130 miles=166 km and this distance will be similar to traveling from Saint-Quentin en Yvelines to Le Mans. This will definitely be another stage for the sprinters with 4 category 4 climbs,3 of them coming after the feed zone and 2 category 3 climb before the feed zone. We start off this morning with a warm up through Fisherville onto 146. The race director pulls in the while flag and the race is on. While on 146 we cross into the Department of Shelby on our way to the District of Finchville, The region know for its open sky and agricultural maintenance. As we continue we make our way through Southville where there is no one to greet us but sprint points are available and it looks as if there is a challenge. I can't tell, wait a minute,Yes, it is "Meat" From team "Missing Link" taking the point.

A split has formed in the peleton with members from Team "Wanderer's" and "String Music" jumping in a breakaway. Team "Beano" spots the attack and is quick to react. Up a Lumpy road known as Pea Ridge and our first Category 3 climb of the day. It looks as if this breakaway may succeed. We come up to the district of Harrisonville and there is a race to the marker and it is Jason from Team "Beano" in his first tour taking the prize. We continue to roll along Benson creek on our way to Hammonds creek for our second Category 3 climb of the day. On the climb there is an attack and it Sparky fresh off his tour of the east coast claiming the points. There seem to be a chase group catching the front of the tour and a sizable breakaway is forming. We make our way up 62 for the first category 4 climb of the day. I can't tell if its uncontested or the other riders just can't keep up with Scout as he takes the points. We are on the outskirts of the Lawrenceburg. This is the largest district of the department knwn as Anderson and is know for its beverage making of Bourbon. The tour gets to pass by one of its top producers "Four Roses". The distilling practices have been suspended due to the tour excessive heat but I assure you, When production is full on the smell is wonderful. Back to the tour and the riders are entering the feed zone. After some nutrition we are back on the road.

Heading out on 62 we hit our second category 4 climb of the day the same stretch of 62. We make our way over to Drydock where a challenging water crossing was made in the first tour of 2004. Luckily we won't have to go through that again this year but we notice some locals and their 4 legged friends frolicking in these same waters today. We roll through 44 an onto 395 where we find the third Category 4 climb of the day. Team "Whatever" is showing their power today and come over the climb in first and second place with "Puddle" and "Minner Dick" leading the tour. With a short rest we are on to the last Category 4 Climb of the day up the Colle du Tracy it is the yellow jerseys showing that they are no slouch taking the final plucky climb and the points. We continue but now on the alternate route to the Waddy district and it appears there is a crash. No, Wait, its just a mechanical. It appear as if the rear wheel of Bruce's machine has collapsed. Team members stop to assist and it is "Nate Dog" with the spare wheel that Bruce needs.

All riders are now through the Waddy district for the final 38 Km of the day. These final kilometers are not very well protected from the elements and the heat of the day is ever present. Back through Southville and Finchville and these riders are really picking up the pace. These are hard riders and no amount of extreme temperatures are going to stop them today. The peleton has caught the breakaway just under the 1k banner The teams of "4 Hags and a Coach Bag" and "String Music" have come to the front to form the leadout train for their sprinters. It going to be close but it is second year tour Veteran Mike Jenkins edging out tour rookie Ted King.

Well what a fitting end to today's race. These Boys and Girls will definitely be looking forward to the upcoming rest weekend, but They can't rest to much with the longest weekend of the 2011 tour.

I have 33 riders listed as finishers.

Results:
The Stage Winner was Mike Jenkins for his 1st stage win, the Bonus was for "Regular Weight(Men 150-199 lbs, Women 120-149 lbs)" for 1 minute. That was awarded to the people who put regular weight on their registration forms or who have contacted me letting me know(14 people). I am not putting an (*) next to their name.
There is also a 1 minute difficulty bonus for this ride. If you meet the requirements for the bonus let me know off list and I will adjust your final time or let you know if it was awarded to you.
Stage 10 (Madison Century) Results

To All interested,

Saturday was Stage 10 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Madison Century.

Fictional Ride Report:
Welcome to the midway point of the tour. We be traveling to Madison for the 7th time in tour history and back. This distance will be similar to traveling from London to Cheltenham. This will definitely be a stage for the sprinters with one category 3 hill at the beginning and one category hill just after the feed zone. We start off this morning with a warm up roll through a small portion of 42 call Prospect Point. We then head down Rose Island road where oddly enough I have never seen the island. The race director pulls in the while flag and the race is on. A small breakaway attempts to form but is quickly thwarted by an attentive peleton as the yellow jerseys think they can escape. Once brought back into the fold, another breakaway forms just before the assent of the Plateau de Goshen. Once atop the plateau the peleton re gathers except for the two escape artist, one from team "Aling" and one from "Georgia Peaches". As the back of the tour closes in on the peleton we see a rider on the side of the road. Oh, Nooo Its Sheblvillian Wes in his first tour. He appears to have something wrong with his machine. The rough roads of the plateau have claimed his rear wheel. Oh, well the service vehicle should be long shortly to ready him for the rest of the tour. Another 1 KM and we have another machine on the side of the road. It appears as if Susan has ripped her back wheel to shreds. The power this rider creates from the 54 tooth chain ring must have been just too much for the wheel to take. It appears as if a teammate is heading back to the service vehicle to ready her for the next stage. We are all hoping these riders can rejoin the tour, only time will tell. We jump forward to Villa Bedford for an early sprint and it appears ,Yes, The sprint was taken by The "Internet Sensation". It is a short ride to the feed zone from here and a good feed zone it is.
Across the border to the burg of Madison where the locals have come out to cheer and celebrate in the most exciting weekend of the year for this town. With full on fair food, a watercraft race, an aerial show and the TMD the town is chock full of spectators. After feeding and a visit to one of the regions candy shops the riders are on there way back up the cole de Milton. There is a challenge for the hill points and it is , Yes, white jersey, Matt who has collected the prize. And what is this, It appear the Yellow jerseys are struggling up the cole. The may be cracking but there is a long way to the finish.
As we come back through Villa Bedford we fast approach our second sprint point at the Chateau Sligo. Wait where is Cathy, Did she stop at Bray's as she mentioned she might do? This left the door wide open for former winner from team "Loose Screws" Janice to take the points.
20 k to go and the Peleton has reformed and has its sights on the breakaway. They are 1:20 seconds ahead and have plenty of time to catch them as they. 15 k to go and the breakaway is in Skylight. with the peleton one minute behind. 10 k to go and Down off the plateau de Goshen is the Peleton. The breakaway is in sight. 1 km to go and the breakaway has been caught. Up to the line and its a fight between Tim of team "Georgia Peaches" and Kim from "Loose screws". But out of nowhere its Timothy from Team "26" capping off an excellent stage tour with his 3rd stage win in his rookie tour season. Congratulations Timothy! Join us next time for Stage 11, "The Salt river Ford".
Stage 9 (Pottershop Century) Results

To All interested,

Sunday was Stage 9 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Pottershop Century. I would like to thank Ford Barr for making sure we all got back safe.

Ride Report:
The ride is a nice route that encompasses mostly parts of the OKHT routes first day. Rain early in the morning and clouds through most of the day kept the temperatures seasonably cool. This did not keep people from dressing with just jerseys to people with jackets as well. I don't exactly remember it raining but I do remember the brakes not working as if it were dry. We start out the day heading out to Fairfield where Ford informs us that it is the town yard sale day. Boy, I hope I can find a school yearbook with Sparky in it. We leave Floyds Fork and go up the familiar 155 hill and onto Routt road. We ride it out to the end and continue the ohkt route to Fairfield. We get to Lilly Pike and the first group has stopped to watch Scout fix a flat. While in awe of this special occasion riders show up and except for a few that went ahead we paitently wait. Flat gets fixed and were one our way. We get about a half mile from the end of Lilly Pike and we have another flat. Turns out its Scout again. After more inspection turns out to be a non related flat. This is good news and we hop back on the bikes and head into Fairfield. While Stopped at Joy's we notice the tents set up across the street and my eyes behold a terrific site. Grills! A few of us wander over and find out there will be a cookout as well with fried chicken, pork chops and catfish. At this point a few of us decide this is a better alternative to the usual Arby's(no offense but, a cookout, come on a jamoca shake is no match for that) and I begin to anticipate our return back through Fairfield more than usual.
We leave Fairfield and head along Wilkerson, Plum Ridge and Irish Ridge. While getting close to the end of Irish Ridge we come across a group just getting started after the one of the new guys had a flat. Good to see that the group didn't leave him out there on his own. This shocks and delights me. Where is the unwritten rule that we don't talk to the new people for two years. At this point we got a big group of riders to head down 162 and then to Pottershop Road and Bardstown. The pace of the ride is slowed down a bit and breaks in the group occur once on Pottershop. On a personal side note, isn't it amazing how a curve in the road looks pretty straight when your going through it at half speed. We make it through Pottershop and the heaviness of the hardest part of this ride is over. Most of the group decide to stop at Arby's while a few continue to Fairfield just 10 miles or so away. While riding up 31E the headwind picks up. When I realize the wind isn't as strong as I think it is I realize, I'm bonkin'! Not a good feeling on a bike but with the help of an endurolyte, a shot of gel and a pack of Beer Nuts the power in my legs return. Now the questions begin. Catfish? Pork Chops? We roll back into Fairfield. The crowd has picked up. The car show has formed the horse rides have begun, but more importantly, The lunch line is open! Matters are complicated when we see Ribs on the menu. Decisions? Decisions? Most of us go with the Pork chop and a couple of sides. Good Choice. Nothing like a fried porkchop to fuel the body and soul. What to for dessert? Diesel reminds me of the Country Pantry ice cream sandwiches and our next goal is set. We leave Faifield as the Arby's crew pulls in.
Heading back to Lilly Pike the blood starts to leave the stomach and return to the legs. Or maybe the aerobic effort just thinned the grease out of the blood. At the end of Lilly Pike, On the quest for ICS we pick up a couple of riders, and inform them of our plan. One rider, who shall remain nameless, is a decent climber, but after the talk about ICS he moves fast up Garbage Hill. I figure Rider just wants to get up the hill but then Rider picks up the pace on the flats to the Country Pantry. I roll into the Pantry and find out Rider has past Diesel in order to get to the ICS. It is amazing how a little thing such as the waiting Big Ice Cream Sandwich can give you super human strength. Geez! I thought I wanted an ICS bad. (Blue Bunny Mississippi Mud, Vanilla and Double Strawberry were available) As I'm eating my Double Strawberry gift from the gods I fail to notice the other two riders at the store. We all chat for a little bit and the Arbys crew shows up. After dessert we leave as a group.
We roll through through Dawson Hill,Echo Trail and Thurman to get back to Routt. At this point we are pretty happy that the rest of the ride is mostly downhill. and from the Carnage that the hill on Thurman put on the group, Some are more happy than others. We coast down 155 and back to the park for the completion of a good days ride. All riders made it back to the park safe, as far as I can tell and most seed in good spirits. Its hard not to feel good after a relatively cool day on the bike.

I have 19 riders listed as finishers.
